If you are planning to purchase some freshwater fish, you also need to choose the aquarium and set it up. If you have never purchased fish before, this may be difficult for you to do. To help, below are some tips on choosing the aquarium and getting it set up so you can purchase your new fish.

Types of Aquarium

You will find different types of aquariums when you start shopping with the main thing to consider is the size.  First, consider how many fish you are purchasing and if you will be adding more fish at a later time. You also have to take into consideration how large the fish will grow. You do not want the fish tank to become overcrowded.  The employee at the establishment where you are purchasing the fish tank can help you choose the right tank size.

The shape of the aquarium is also something to take into consideration. You will find the most common shape is rectangular. You will also find hexagonal tanks.

Setting up Aquarium

Once you choose the new aquarium, it can be fun setting it up for the first time. First, use a damp cloth to wipe down the tank both inside and out to remove any dust.

Add some gravel to the tank. Just make sure you wash it well first to remove dust and debris. Put approximately an inch of gravel in the tank.  Next, you can choose plants for the aquarium. There are artificial plants that are small enough to use in tanks. You can also purchase stones and rocks to add character to the fish tank. Along with this, add some driftwood, which can be found in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Now it is time to add the water. The best type of water to use is purified mineral water as this water is free from chemicals that will be toxic for your fish.  Next cycle the tank. You can purchase a cycle kit at a pet store, and one may come with the tank you purchased. Follow the directions on the kit to do this.   Ad the water slowly so you do not disturb the gravel.

Purchase a filter for the tank and install it correctly. This is important as the filter will remove impurities from the water. Add a heater on the side of the tank along with a thermometer so you can keep an eye on how warm the water is. The temperature of the water depends on the type of fish you purchase.

Now you can safely add your fish to your new aquarium.
