You should think of your house's plumbing system as its vascular system. It makes sure that all the liquids get around your house, just like your veins make sure that your blood gets where it's supposed to go. And just like your vascular system, those pipes can become narrowed and clogged, and can keep water or wastewater from flowing through the pipes the way that it should. Stuff is going to accumulate in your pipes and cause them to narrow, but there are things that you can do that will help to keep them from getting too narrow or clean them up if they are too narrow.

Avoid Grease

One thing that you can do is to help keep your pipes from narrowing is to avoid pouring grease or oil down your pipes. As grease cools, it will start to solidify and stick to the sides of your pipes. It will also be sticky, and will attract food bits and other debris, which means every more gunk will build up on your pipes. You can pour that oil and grease into a can, jar, or ceramic bowl or mug. Once it solidifies or cools, you can just dispose of in your trash. Never put hot grease or oil in your trash, it could cause problems like melting the trash can or bin liner.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

It may seem like baking soda and vinegar is the answer to just about everything, but that's because it can be very helpful with a lot of things. You can use it to help clean up the pipes in your house. What you want to do is first boil some water and pour that down the drain. After you have done that, put some baking soda in the drain. You want to put the baking soda in first because the vinegar will just run down the drain. You might have a hard time pouring the baking soda down your pipes, but if you use a funnel or roll up some paper or a paper plate so that it has a narrow opening at one end and put that in the drain, you should have many fewer problems with putting the baking soda in the pipes. Then you are going to want to pour the vinegar down the pipes and cover the drain. That way everything stays in the pipe. Give it a few minutes, then pour some more boiling water after it. You can do this monthly, if you want, to help keep the narrowing of your pipes under control.

If you've tried everything you can and the pipes still aren't working right, you can always call a plumbing service and ask them to take a look at your pipes to see if they can help you.
